Pacific Maritime Heritage Center

The Pacific Ocean is home to a diverse range of fisheries, including a large commercial fishing fleet. The Pacific Maritime Heritage Center tells the stories of those who live and work near the coast, on its rivers and estuaries. The Pacific Maritime Heritage Center is dedicated to celebrating everything related to the ocean, such as its history and art. Furthermore, this center recognizes the importance of commerce and scientific research in relation to the ocean. The Pacific Maritime Heritage Center is more than just a museum; it’s an interactive center that incorporates a working wharf, educational programs, and local maritime uses. The center features maritime-related exhibits and art designed to entertain and educate people of all ages. By instilling in visitors a sense of place and community, we hope they’ll want to come back again and again. The Lincoln County Historical Society purchased the building and land in 2004, which is located on Newport’s historic Bayfront. The site was first home to a building constructed in the 1880s for Dr. James Bayley and his wife, Elizabeth. Unfortunately, that structure burned down in 1923, leaving only the foundation and chimney behind. In 1925, World War I hero General Ulysses Grant McAlexander built a new house on the site. Then, in the late 1970s and early 80s, it underwent extensive remodeling and expansion before opening as Smuggler’s Cove—a restaurant and nightclub combo. For two decades following its reopening, Gracie’s at Smuggler’s Cove inhabited the space until 1999 when it closed its doors permanently.

“My husband & I really enjoyed our visit to this museum. We were able to see history by viewing artifacts, photos, artwork, and really enjoyed the theater! The view from atop the hill is fantastic. Looking out one of the windows, I could imagine being one of the young children who once lived there, seeing much of the same view of the Pacific. A+ gift shop too! Good size parking area up on hill. Will definitely stop in again.”
