Pacific City Dory Days

What is the Dory Days Festival? 

Dory Days is an annual celebration of the local dory fishing culture unique to Pacific City. It has been recognized by the Oregon Heritage Commission as an Oregon Heritage Tradition, joining only a few other events with this honor.  

Event Details 

The event is held the third weekend of July every year and is scheduled for  July 19 – 21, 2024. 

This year’s schedule has not been finalized but participants can expect a parade, a boat display, live music, a fish fry serving fresh dory-caught fish, an artisan market, a dory derby where local fisherman compete to catch the largest fish, and plenty of activities for kids.  

What is a Dory Boat? 

The dory boat design has its roots in Scandinavia and was later adapted and modified by different cultures. The designed gained popularity in the United States, and the boats were introduced to Pacific City in the early 20th century. The first dory fisherman in the region were inspired by the boat’s seaworthiness and ability to handle the challenging conditions of the Pacific Ocean. 

Dory boats are characterized by their flat bottoms, high sides, and pointed bows. They are typically open boats, making them well-suited for launching and landing directly on the beach. 

These boats hold significant cultural importance in Pacific City, representing the town’s maritime heritage. The dorymen’s traditions, skills, and camaraderie have been passed down through generations.
