Explore the Stunning Beaches

Explore the Stunning Oregon Beaches

The Oregon Coast is renowned for its diverse and picturesque beaches. Whether you’re looking to relax on sandy shores or explore rocky tide pools, you’ll find the perfect spot:

Yachats: A serene spot with rugged coastline, perfect for peaceful walks and exploring tide pools.

Cannon Beach: Famous for the iconic Haystack Rock, this beach offers wide sandy expanses ideal for sunbathing, beachcombing, and photography.

Seaside: A family-friendly destination with a bustling promenade, arcade games, and plenty of dining options.

Lincoln City: Known for its seven miles of beach and the unique Finders Keepers glass float treasure hunt.

Bandon: Offers dramatic sea stacks and excellent opportunities for tidepooling and wildlife viewing.

Whale Watching: A Majestic Experience

Late May is an excellent time for whale watching along the Oregon Coast and what better than Memorial Day Weekend? Gray whales migrate northward during this period, and you can often spot them from various viewpoints or join a whale watching tour for a closer look. Top spots include:

  • Depoe Bay: Depoe Bay is known as the “Whale Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast,” offering both shore-based viewing and chartered tours.
  • Cape Perpetua: Provides elevated viewpoints for spotting whales and other marine life.
  • Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint: Offers panoramic ocean views and frequent whale sightings.

Remember to bring binoculars and dress in layers, as coastal weather can be unpredictable.

Discover Coastal Towns and State Parks

The Oregon Coast is dotted with charming towns and scenic state parks:

  • Astoria: Rich in history with attractions like the Astoria Column and the Columbia River Maritime Museum.
  • Newport: Home to the Oregon Coast Aquarium and Yaquina Head Lighthouse.
  • Ecola State Park: Offers hiking trails with stunning views of the coastline and access to secluded beaches.
  • Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area: Features towering sand dunes and opportunities for tidepooling.
  • Cape Perpetua Scenic Area: Boasts old-growth forests and dramatic coastal vistas.

Take time to explore the charming coastal towns like Astoria, Cannon Beach, Newport, and Depoe Bay. Each town has its own unique attractions, from historic landmarks to unique shops to delicious seafood restaurants.

Visit State Parks

Oregon’s coastal state parks offer beautiful scenery and outdoor activities. Consider visiting Ecola State Park for panoramic views, Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area for sand dunes and tidepools, or Cape Perpetua Scenic Area for old-growth forests and coastal viewpoints.

Savor Local Cuisine

Indulge in the freshest seafood and local delicacies:

  • Dungeness Crab: A regional favorite, often served steamed or in crab cakes.
  • Clam Chowder: Creamy and hearty, best enjoyed with a slice of sourdough bread.
  • Fish and Chips: Crispy battered fish served with fries, a coastal classic.
  • Marionberry Pie: A sweet treat made from Oregon’s own marionberries.
  • Saltwater Taffy: Colorful and chewy candies available in various flavors.

Many coastal towns host farmers markets and food festivals during Memorial Day Weekend, offering a chance to sample local produce and artisanal goods.

Attend Memorial Day Events and Festivals

Celebrate the holiday with local events and festivals:

  • Fleet of Flowers Memorial Day Ceremony (Depoe Bay): A unique tribute where boats decorated with flowers are launched to honor those lost at sea.
  • Azalea Festival (Brookings): Features a parade, arts and crafts, and live entertainment.
  • Memorial Day Weekend Blues Fest (Nehalem): Enjoy live blues music at the Nehalem Bay Winery.
  • Finders Keepers Glass Float Hunt (Lincoln City): Search for hand-blown glass floats hidden along the beach.

Embark on Scenic Hikes

Explore the natural beauty of the Oregon Coast through hiking:

  • Cape Lookout Trail: A moderate hike offering panoramic ocean views.
  • Oregon Coast Trail: A long-distance trail that traverses the entire coastline, with sections suitable for day hikes.
  • Cascade Head Trail: Features lush forests and meadows with opportunities to spot wildlife.

Remember to wear sturdy footwear and check trail conditions before setting out.

Attend Local Festivals or Events

Memorial Day Weekend often coincides with festivals, farmers markets, and other events along the Oregon Coast. Check local event calendars to see what’s happening during your visit and join in the festivities.

Psst: Keep an eye out for glass floats hidden on the beaches of Lincoln City. Local float ferries will be hiding an extra 50 red, white and blue glass floats over the weekend. Remember if you find a glass float, it is yours to keep!

Relax in Comfortable Accommodations

After a day of exploration, unwind in one of our cozy vacation rentals. From oceanfront homes to pet-friendly cottages, we offer a variety of options to suit your needs. Many properties feature amenities like hot tubs, fireplaces, and fully equipped kitchens.

Whether you’re watching a sunset, listening to the waves, or enjoying a leisurely stroll along the beach, savor these peaceful moments.

Memorial Day Weekend is a popular time on the Oregon Coast, so it’s advisable to make reservations early. Whether you’re interested in outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, or simply relaxing by the sea, the Oregon Coast offers an unforgettable getaway.
