Oregon’s king tides are back for the 2025–2026 season, bringing dramatic surf, coastal flooding in low-lying areas, and some of the year’s most spectacular storm-watching. The next sequences are set to hit the shores November 5–7, December 4–6, 2025 and Jan 1–4, 2026. This natural phenomenon is a stunning sight to behold, but safety precautions should be taken to observe the powerful tides safely and from a distance. Always check real-time tide and weather conditions before you go.
Here’s what you need to know about the king tides:
The king tides refer to the three highest tide sequences of the year. These exceptionally high tides occur when the orbit and alignment of the earth, moon and sun combine to pull on the earth’s oceans. The higher-than-normal tide combined with heavy winds and storms can cause coastal flooding, erosion, and waves as high as 35 feet!
Here are some suggestions for viewing locations, traveling from North to South along the Oregon Coast.
Shore Acres State Park (Coos Bay): Arguably Oregon’s most dramatic wave action with a cliff-top storm-watching shelter; stay behind railings and heed closures.
For live tidal updates, including times, use NOAA’s water levels map.
Perfect for a large family or a group of friends, a stay at Roads End Light House in Lincoln City will put you within easy reach of Roads End Recreation Site for viewing the king tides. Prefer to stay warm and dry? You can still enjoy breathtaking views of the ocean from the back deck or inside by the fire.
A couple looking for a romantic getaway can enjoy warming up by the fire or taking a dip in the hot tub after viewing the surging tides at Serendipity – a charming beach cottage overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Depoe Bay.
Grab your buddies and up to two pups and head to Tolvana #3 in Cannon Beach. Observe the king tides and Roosevelt elk at Ecola State Park, sip some suds at Public Coast Brewing Co., and strike some irons at nearby Manzanita Links.
Nestled just a couple of houses back from the “Prom”, a bright and cozy beach cottage awaits. The Seaside Prom sleeps up to 6 and is dog friendly. Prepare a home cooked breakfast in the fully equipped kitchen, bundle up, and then head out to the Promenade to view the tides. Don’t forget to pick up some saltwater taffy or seafoam candy from several local Seaside confectioners.
King tides are a reminder of the sheer power of mother nature. Although an incredible sight, we recommend viewing the tides with caution and care.
