7 Great Winter Hikes on the Oregon Coast

If chilly temperatures and maybe a little wet weather is not enough to keep you off the trails, winter hiking on the Oregon Coast can be a beautiful and invigorating way to experience the rugged beauty of this stunning region without the crowds of the peak tourist season.  

And remember the Norwegian saying – “Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær!” which translates to “There is no bad weather, only bad clothes!”  

Here are some more hiking suggestions for your winter stay on the Oregon Coast: 

Ecola State Park (Cannon Beach) 

Ecola State Park offers stunning coastal views and a variety of hiking trails. The Clatsop Loop Trail provides panoramic views of the coastline and the iconic Haystack Rock. Keep your eyes open for deer, elk and eagles. You may even spot migrating gray whales throughout winter and spring. 

Cape Perpetua Scenic Area (near Yachats) 

This area offers several trails with stunning ocean views. The Captain Cook Trail, Giant Spruce Trail, and the St. Perpetua Trail are popular choices. The area offers lots of fun activities and adventures for families, including a mobile app to help explore the coastal forest, junior ranger programs, and more. Ranger-led programs and guided walks are available throughout the year, including winter and spring whale watching events. 

Neahkahnie Mountain (Manzanita) 

Neahkahnie Mountain features a trail that leads to the summit, providing panoramic views of the coastline. The trailhead can be accessed from Oswald West State Park. 

Cape Falcon Trail (Oswald West State Park) 

This loop takes you through lush coastal forest and leads to the Cape Falcon viewpoint overlooking the Pacific Ocean. 

Cape Lookout State Park (near Tillamook) 

The Cape Lookout Trail extends along a scenic ridge, offering stunning views of the ocean and the coastline. The trail can be windy in winter, so be prepared. 

Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor (near Brookings) 

This scenic corridor offers various trails with dramatic coastal views. Some popular trails include the Arch Rock Trail and the Natural Bridges Cove Trail. 

Devil’s Punchbowl State Natural Area (Otter Rock) 

While the Devil’s Punchbowl itself is a unique geological feature, there are also several hiking trails around the area with breathtaking coastal views.
